We treat and prime it rather than covering it again, because a windscreen bonded onto corroded steel is a windscreen that leaks and, in a roll-over, does not hold.

Where Melville glass gets broken

Two distinct patterns show up here. The first is stone damage from Barry Hertzog, Judith Road and the Beyers Naudé approach — ordinary commuter chip damage that spreads across a cold night followed by a hot afternoon on an unshaded street.

The second is break-in damage to side and quarter glass rather than the windscreen, which is a reality of street parking anywhere in the area. We replace side, quarter and rear glass as readily as windscreens, and on a smash-and-grab we vacuum the door cards, seat rails and carpet before handover. Loose tempered fragments in the door skin are the part most installers skip and the part that rattles for months afterwards.

Chip repair while you are at the coffee shop

If the damage is smaller than a R5 coin and has not run to the edge of the glass, it is almost always a resin repair of about 30 minutes rather than a full replacement — and position on the screen does not disqualify it, including damage directly in the driver's line of sight. On most comprehensive policies chip repair is settled at no excess.
